Rescue Stories To Celebrate

BEFORE Rescue
Casey, Spencer, Bailey & Maya

These four German Shepherd mix Seniors had been living in a vacant home for more than a year because their owner had passed away and an elderly family member was coming by to leave water and food when they could.

The family member had serious health issues and the home was about to be foreclosed on when Wescott Acres Pet Rescue heard about these four dogs needing rescue.

We found Casey in such need of a nail trim that she had 3" nails and could not walk without pain; Spencer was blind with heart issues and getting confused about where he was; Bailey was in decent health; and so was Maya.

We got them all veterinary exams and medications for various skin issues and found homes for all but Casey who remains in our "Senior Care" foster home.

Our Mission

There’s a certain place in everyone’s heart calling us to a certain task. A warm spot that tells us we have a need – a desire to fulfill something necessary for personal happiness. It doesn’t have to be our life’s work, but most often becomes our life’s passion. If we listen and respond, we become more at peace with ourselves. Quite often self-fulfillment is achieved, and what we’ve been looking for all our life is right here under our nose.

I have listened to my heart and accepted my life-long calling to full-time pet care. My involvement in rescue and rehabilitation of abused, abandoned and neglected animals has helped me realize how much I desire working to enhance the lives of all animals.

In May 2001, I purchased an eight-acre farm in the Irmo/St.Andrews area of Columbia, S.C. I designed and built a luxury pet resort for dogs, cats, horses and goats. We opened our doors the week before Thanksgiving, 2001.

Wescott Acres Luxury Pet Resort is unique in many ways, but most important to me is the resort’s dedication to the emotional needs of all pets that visit. Whether boarding, being groomed, or participating in daycare, all pets are nurtured and encouraged as they receive lots of attention from the Wescott Acres Team.

By growing up in a family that rescued and rehabilitated domestic and wild animals, I developed a love for all animals. I have volunteered all my life for local humane associations, and have owned many pets. These experiences have helped me gain knowledge of different types of animals and their behavior. I have a natural compassion for any animal’s needs, and hope that brings credibility to my ability to care for other’s family

pets.

I have worked in many different capacities with The Animal Protection League, Project Pet, Save Our Strays, The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, F.I.D.O., S.Q. Rescue, Rottweiller Rescue, Pawmetto Lifeline, and other pet rescue organizations.

Over the years, through my community outreach service I became known as “The Hay Lady” or “The Dog Food Lady” in several poor Columbia neighborhoods where I walked door-to-door for twenty-one years during the 1970’s to 1990’s, offering nourishment and comfort for neglected pets and education and assistance to their owners. I have carried pet  food, wheat straw, water, other bedding, and talked with pet owners

offering my assistance and advice to help them give better care of their pets.

My family has spent many Thanksgiving and Christmas mornings cooking rice and turkey, and driving for hours to deliver bowls of this warm food to pets on the ends of chains and in small pens - almost forgotten on such a special day!

We work together with a passionate group of friends and volunteers who share this compassion for animal welfare! We coax frightened or injured dogs and cats from underneath cars, behind trash dumps, and from ditches and drain pipes to rescue them and give them a better life.

Wescott Acres Pet Rescue helps better the lives of about 300 abused, abandoned and neglected dogs and cats each year. We get the medical care they need, and support them emotionally through comfortable housing, good food and exercise, with lots of hands-on love! We work to find excellent homes, and cry with happiness when they leave with their

adoptive families!

We hope to educate the public about spaying and neutering pets, feeding proper diets, providing adequate shelter and water, and providing annual health care for pets. Personal involvement with pet owners is the strongest tool we have against animal abuse and neglect.

We want everyone to realize the importance of being attentive to their pet’s physical and emotional needs. All pets have individual personalitie just like we humans do. The dog's “pack” mentality gives them a strong desire to be an integral part of our family, their “pack.” Cats need to know we are "there" for them. We should not separate them from involvement with us.

And, we must remember that our pet’s unconditional love is a GIFT to be TREASURED!

Sweet, sweet Sundae loves children, other dogs and cats. She has had a good start in life, but her family cannot care for her any longer.

We just adore this sweet little girl who is only 40 pounds.

We don’t know what breed is, but probably she has some hound dog and a breed with a short pug nose.

She is just precious to look at and very snuggly!

Sundae walks very well on a leash, loves to be inside, crates when necessary, and it’s just an all round great medium-sized girl for anyone!

Baby K is a beautiful medium-hair kitten, 6 months old, neutered with all vaccinations. He lives with 4 active dogs, other young kittens and adult cats. He is great with all pets and all people. Very affectionate! He is VERY SPECIAL TO US!  Just a great all-around personality and extremely affectionate!

Baby K is named after “Kay Plumbing” because two wonderful Kay plumbers worked to rescue him from a pipe he was caught in 4 weeks old! He was exhausted and battered up a little.  They gave him water and cared for him until Wescott Acres Pet Rescue could pick him up. They saved his tiny life!

FOR ADOPTION: Want Some Snuggle Buddy in your Life? ...

This is "Buddy" and he is ready to snuggle! He is THE BEST snuggler! Promise!

For more than 2 years, Buddy struggled to survive outdoors in an apartment complex after his family moved away and left him behind. A kind neighbor fed him on her deck, but last month he showed up scratched, bitten, and hurting after being attacked.

She reached out to Wescott Acres Pet Rescue, and Buddy’s life finally turned around.

With veterinary care, Buddy’s wounds healed beautifully. His upper respiratory infection is gone. He’s had a dental cleaning, all vaccinations, and has been neutered.

He is now healthy, safe, and thriving!

Buddy has been fostered by Brittany, a wonderful nurse, and she says he is “such a guy!" with his strong, muscular body, thick soft hair, loves belly rubs, a full bowl of wet food, and even wags his tail when he eats! His veterinarian calls him a “big cuddle bug.”

Why Everyone Falls in Love With Buddy:

• Barely sheds

• Gorgeous large green eyes and about 3 years old

• Talks to you! .... REALLY!!

• LOVES attention - TOTALLY the CUDDLY GUY!

• So affectionate and grateful to be indoors

• A true companion who wants to be by your side

Buddy Needs a Special Home - Buddy is FIV‑positive, which means he should be an only cat or live with another FIV‑positive cat.

FIV does not affect dogs or people.

He currently shows no symptoms, and with good care, FIV cats can live long, normal lives. As seniors, they may be more prone to infections, so regular vet visits and a loving home make all the difference.

Buddy is truly an exceptional guy who has survived so much and still loves with his whole heart! He deserves safety, comfort, and someone who will never abandon him again.

** He is a "Cat - Dog" who follows you around and wants to be a companion and best friend. What great company he is!

Completing Families One Adoption at a Time Support Pet Rescue and Donate!

Wescott Acres Pet Rescue is an all-volunteer, non-profit rescue operating in Columbia, South  Carolina. Our purpose is to save the lives of abandoned, abused and neglected dogs and cats and place them into permanent homes. We ensure that each pet coming into our care is given  the highest quality care and adopted into a loving home to be treated as a companion. We also  educate on the importance of spaying and neutering pets as the answer to reducing our  communities’ pet overpopulation problem.

All rescued pets receive veterinary treatment and stay in a foster home where we support them  emotionally. Our foster parents  get to know them and their needs.

Adopting a Friend!

We want to ensure our pets are all adopted into secure, loving homes where they will be valued companions and treated like family members. We check personal references, a  veterinary reference, and visit the home each pet will go to live in.

Once a home is approved, a contract is signed whereby the pet’s new family agrees to certain  quality-of–life specifications for their pet and agree to return the pet to Wescott Acres Pet  Rescue if they ever find themselves in a situation where they cannot care for the pet any longer. We are totally  committed to the life of each pet. After all, the future of this  prt is in our hands!

How Wescott Acres Pet Rescue All Began!

Laura Thackston Mitchell has been passionate about helping all animals all her life.  She shares ,  " Our family loved all animals! We lived in the city yet rescued and rehabilitated domestic and wild animals as  much as we could. We lived in Columbia in the winter and gathered with extended family in a two-room  cottage on beautiful Lake Murray in the summer months. We cared for rescued ducks, chickens, rabbits, cats,  dogs and birds. My mother was always willing to extend a helping hand to a needy animal; and I flourished in  her nurturing care for all creatures. My respect for all creatures evolved through my childhood experiences  while caring for animals in need. I remember after every May when people we knew were ready to dispose of  grown up chicks and ducklings they got at Easter, Mom allowed us to take them in and care for them in our  backyard to save their lives! She was upset at their being discarded with so little value placed on their lives.

I have supported and worked with many different animal welfare organizations: Project Pet, The Animal  Protection League, The Humane Association for Cruelty to Animals, SQ Rescue, Save our Strays, Best Friends,  Hilton Head Animal Shelter and others. These experiences have helped me gain knowledge of different types of  animals and their behavior.

For 21 years I walked through poor neighborhoods in my community offering outreach services and became  known as “The Hay Lady” or “The Dog Food Lady.” I raised my son by taking him with me to  these poor areas. We offered nourishment and comfort for neglected pets by carrying pet food, wheat straw,  water and blankets. We offered pet owners assistance and advice to help them give better care to their pets.  On cold rainy days we fed chained or penned dogs our mixture of rice and chicken we cooked. We often  exchanged dog’s short chains for lighter, longer chains, because the owners would not remove their pet from  such confinement. We poured hot water on frozen water bowls, provided water bowls where there were none,  petted and comforted lonely dogs in pens and on chains behind houses, and gave healthy treats to them all.  We took shovels and cleaned poo that was stacked up two feet in pens and carried it away in trash bags so a  dog could have clean ground to lie on for a while. We picked up old dog houses on the side of the road and  purchased them when necessary to give them to pets in areas where they had nothing but a lean-to or a tree  for shelter from weather. We offered to re-home pets, and paid money for others just to remove them from  poor conditions.

We tried to help the helpless …always realizing our job would never be “done” and that there  were always more pets that we just couldn’t get to…My personal goal has been to “better” the immediate situation and then to help prevent the future from being  the same. By educating the public about spaying and neutering pets, feeding proper diets, providing adequate  shelter and water, and providing annual health care for pets, I have tried to better the living conditions for the  future. Personal involvement with pet owners is the strongest tool we have against animal abuse and neglect.

Laura says: there’s a certain place in everyone’s heart calling us to a certain task. A warm spot.... Under our nose. In my early 40’s I listened to my heart  and accepted my calling to full-time pet care. My involvement in rescue and  rehabilitation of abused, abandoned and  neglected animals has helped me realize  how much I enjoy working to enhance  the lives of all animals. In May 2001, I purchased an eight-acre  farm in the Irmo/St. Andrews area of  Columbia, S.C. I designed and built a  luxury pet resort for dogs, cats, horses  and exotic pets which would incorporate  homeless pets into our facility for quality care and rehabilitation. Our doors opened the week before  Thanksgiving, 2001.

Every person involved in pet care at Wescott Acres is a special part of a compassionate team with a passion for  pet care. We realize that each pet has unique needs and respect that. Each pet has a history of care that  shapes their personality, and our attention to that individual care will help each pet blossom into his/her full  potential of happiness. We cater to individual pet personalities so their experiences will be positive and  enjoyable while they are staying with us.

Our hope for the future is that pet owners will realize the importance of being attentive to their pet’s physical  and emotional needs, recognizing that all animals have individual personalities just like we humans do. We  encourage spaying and neutering as being essential to reduce the unwanted pet over-population in our nation  today. And, we teach that each pet’s “pack” mentality gives them a strong desire to be an integral part of our  family, their “pack.” We should offer them involvement in our family unit. And, we must always remember  that their unconditional love is a gift to be treasured.

Please support our mission of helping relieve suffering of helpless, homeless pets. Help us be a voice for the  voiceless.
